Breath Awareness: Supporting Emotional Healing Through Breathwork

Breath is directly connected to the amount of freedom we feel in our bodies. Aligning oneself with healthy breathing is one of the most effective practices one can adopt to achieve optimum life balance. When we breathe with ease, depth, fullness, and flow – we notice all aspects of life feel more expansive. Healthy breathing creates a pathway to a calmer and more focused mind that is free of restrictions. Engaging in healthy breathing is a natural method for one to boost personal energy, enhance emotional wellness, as well as foster more loving and peaceful relationships with others. Simply, by changing one’s breathing patterns, it is possible to restore balance to the body’s stress response systems and relieve symptoms of anxiety and trauma. Your thought and emotional responses to any given situation are a result of your perception regarding a situation. Anxiety is defined as a neurotic disorder characterized by agitation, apprehension, doubt, fear, or uncertainty directly out of proportion to any known cause. Being overwhelmed by emotions and/or thoughts that trigger prolonged anxiety is often an indication of trauma. Trauma is defined as anything that we experience as a threat to our survival or overall well-being. These threats invade our nervous system and may lead to belief and behavioral changes in one’s life that create patterns of dis-ease. Bringing awareness to the breath, an individual is able to process emotions and thoughts somatically, as opposed to processing them through the cognitive mind. With proper pacing and guidance, breathing has the powerful potential to support restoration of the nervous system’s natural rhythm. Once the nervous system is reestablished, the root of anxiety and/or trauma can be healed.
